The deliverer rejected, then sent

In Stephen's speech, Moses is first rejected by his own people ('Who made you a ruler and judge over us?') and later sent by God as ruler and deliverer. Stephen draws the pattern out as a charge against his hearers, who are resisting the Holy Spirit as their fathers did, and it is widely read as a pattern for Jesus' rejection and exaltation.

When: Moses, c. 1446 or c. 1250 BC (traditional dates); Stephen's speech, c. AD 31–35.
