Prophecy & fulfillmentWidely held reading

Josiah named by a prophet

A man of God cries out against Jeroboam's altar at Bethel that a child named Josiah will be born to David's house and will sacrifice the priests on it. Some 300 years later King Josiah destroys the altar at Bethel and burns bones on it, with the account recalling the earlier prophecy. The details, including the naming, are sometimes treated as a later editorial addition.

When: Jeroboam I, c. 930 BC; Josiah's reform, c. 622 BC.

Original passage1 Kings 13:1–3
Where the New Testament applies it2 Kings 23:15–18
Ways people read this (3)
  • A genuine prediction made about three centuries before Josiah was born.
  • An account composed in or after Josiah's time, shaping the earlier story with the benefit of hindsight (the common critical view).
  • A literary device in the Deuteronomistic history showing how prophecy and fulfillment shape the narrative.
