Prophecy & fulfillmentWidely held reading

The Davidic promise first fulfilled in Solomon

God told David that his son would build the temple and that God would establish his kingdom. Solomon says at the dedication that God has kept his word. Many readers see in this a two-stage promise: a near fulfillment in Solomon, and a fuller one awaited in a later son of David.

When: David, c. 1000 BC; Solomon's temple, c. 960 BC.

Where the New Testament applies it1 Kings 8:15–20
Ways people read this (2)
  • The promise is fulfilled in the Davidic dynasty as a whole, and ultimately in Christ.
  • The promise is conditional on obedience (1 Kings 9:4-9), and it is partly fulfilled in Solomon's reign.
