David and the bread of the Presence

When challenged about his disciples plucking grain on the Sabbath, Jesus points to David, who ate the consecrated bread when he and his men were hungry. The argument is that David's need took precedence over ritual rules, and that Jesus is greater than the temple and Lord of the Sabbath.

When: David's flight from Saul, c. 1012 BC; Jesus' teaching in Galilee, c. AD 28–30.
