Manna and the bread of life

God fed Israel with manna, bread from heaven, for forty years. When the crowds mention it to Jesus he says it was the Father, not Moses, who gave the bread from heaven, and that he himself is the true bread from heaven, which gives life to the world. Paul also cites the gathering of manna as a pattern of fair sharing.

When: Wilderness (c. 1446 or c. 1250 BC); Jesus in Capernaum, c. AD 29; 2 Corinthians, c. AD 55–56.

Ways people read this (2)
  • The bread discourse points both to Jesus' incarnation and to his death (John 6:51).
  • Traditions differ on whether the discourse refers to the Lord's Supper (Catholic, Orthodox and many Lutheran readings) or to faith in Christ generally.

Barley loaves and a hundred men

Elisha fed a hundred men with twenty barley loaves, with some left over. John, alone among the gospels, tells us Jesus fed the five thousand with five barley loaves. The pattern is often seen as deliberate, with Jesus' miracle greater than the prophet's, but John does not say so explicitly.

When: Elisha, c. 850 BC; Jesus' feeding of the five thousand, c. AD 29.
