BackgroundWidely held reading

The test of a prophet

Deuteronomy gives a test: if a prophet speaks in the LORD's name and the word does not come true, the LORD did not speak it. Jeremiah applies it to Hananiah, who broke Jeremiah's yoke and predicted a quick end of Babylon's rule, and who was told he would die within the year. The text says he died in the seventh month.

When: Deuteronomy (traditionally c. 1406 BC); Jeremiah and Hananiah, 594/593 BC.

Where the New Testament applies itJeremiah 28:10–17
Ways people read this (2)
  • The test is a rule of thumb for this situation, since prophets also spoke warnings that were conditional (Jeremiah 18:7-10).
  • Deuteronomy 13 adds a second test: a prophet who leads people to other gods is false even if the sign comes true.
