BackgroundWidely held reading

Teach us to number our days

The only psalm attributed to Moses meditates on human brevity against God's eternity — a thousand years like yesterday — and prays for wisdom to count our days and for God's favor on our work. It frames the wilderness generation's mortality.

When: Attributed to Moses; placed first in Book IV of the Psalms.

Echoed inDeuteronomy 32:7 — Moses' song urging remembrance of the days of old.
