Elijah before the day of the LORD

Malachi promises that God will send 'Elijah the prophet' before the great and awesome day of the LORD to turn hearts. Jesus says John the Baptist is the Elijah who was to come, and Gabriel says John will go in Elijah's spirit and power.

Some standing here will not taste death

Jesus tells his disciples that some standing there will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom. The saying is followed in all three synoptic gospels by the account of the transfiguration. What event Jesus means is debated.

When: Jesus' teaching at Caesarea Philippi, c. AD 29–30.
