Prophecy & fulfillmentTraditional reading

The offspring who will crush the serpent

After the fall, God tells the serpent that the woman's offspring will strike its head while it strikes his heel. Christian tradition has long read this as the first hint of a coming deliverer (sometimes called the protoevangelium). The New Testament alludes to it (Romans 16:20) but does not quote it as a prediction of Jesus.

When: Set at the beginning of human history; written down within the Torah.

Original passageGenesis 3:15
Echoed inRomans 16:20 — "The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet."
Ways people read this (2)

  • Many Jewish and some modern Christian readers see a general statement about the ongoing conflict between humanity and evil.
