BackgroundWidely held reading

The fear of the LORD is the beginning

Proverbs opens by defining wisdom as beginning with reverent awe of God, not cleverness. The father's lectures urge the son to refuse the gang's invitation to violence and quick profit — wisdom as a moral path, not just intellect.

When: Solomonic collection; opening instruction, Proverbs 1–9.

Echoed inJames 3:17 — Wisdom from above as pure, peaceable, gentle.
