BackgroundWidely held reading

A time for everything

Ecclesiastes' poem of seasons — birth and death, weeping and laughing, war and peace — observes that God sets eternity in the human heart yet keeps the whole pattern beyond our grasp. The Teacher's refrain is enjoyment of present gifts within reverent limits.

When: Post-exilic wisdom voice writing as Qoheleth; traditionally linked to Solomon.

Echoed inGalatians 4:4 — "When the fullness of time had come" — God's appointed seasons.
