  1. Isaiah 65:17–25 · oracle of hope · 700 BC – 500 BC

    God promises to create new heavens and a new earth and a joyful Jerusalem without weeping or early death. People will enjoy their houses and vineyards, God will answer before they call, and the wolf and lamb will feed together.

  2. John 14:1–4 · speech · AD 30 – AD 33

    Jesus tells his anxious disciples not to be troubled, because he is going to prepare a place in his Father's house and will return to take them to be with him.

  3. 2 Corinthians 5:1–5 · teaching · AD 55 – AD 56

    Paul compares the body to a tent that will be taken down, and longs for an eternal dwelling from God. He says God has prepared them for this and given the Spirit as a pledge.

  4. Philippians 3:17–21 · exhortation · AD 60 – AD 62

    Paul urges them to follow his example and warns about those who live as enemies of the cross with their minds on earthly things. He says believers' citizenship is in heaven, and Christ will transform their bodies to be like His glorious body.

  5. Hebrews 11:8–16 · teaching · AD 60 – AD 69

    Abraham obeyed God's call and lived as a stranger in tents. With Sarah he looked for a city with foundations, and they and their family died in faith, longing for a heavenly homeland.

  6. Hebrews 12:18–24 · teaching · AD 60 – AD 69

    The readers have not come to a terrifying mountain like Sinai, but to Mount Zion, the heavenly Jerusalem, with angels, the firstborn, God and Jesus the mediator of a new covenant.

  7. 2 Peter 3:11–18 · exhortation · AD 64 – AD 68

    Since all will be destroyed, Peter asks his readers to live in holiness and look forward to a new heaven and earth where righteousness dwells. He calls them to be at peace, be on guard against error, notes Paul's letters can be hard to understand, and ends with a call to grow in grace and knowledge.

    The elder says those in white serve God day and night in his temple, no longer hungering or thirsting, and the Lamb will shepherd them and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.

  9. Revelation 21:1–4 · vision · AD 68 – AD 96

    John sees a new heaven and a new earth and the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down like a bride. A loud voice announces that God will dwell with his people, wiping away every tear, with no more death, mourning, crying, or pain.

  10. Revelation 21:9–14 · vision · AD 68 – AD 96

    An angel shows John the bride, the holy city Jerusalem, coming down from heaven with the glory of God and twelve gates named for Israel's tribes and twelve foundations named for the apostles.

  11. Revelation 21:15–21 · vision · AD 68 – AD 96

    The angel measures the city, a perfect cube with walls of jasper and streets of pure gold. The foundations are decorated with jewels, and each gate is a single pearl.

  12. Revelation 22:1–5 · vision · AD 68 – AD 96

    The angel shows John the river of the water of life flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb, with the tree of life on each side bearing fruit and leaves for healing the nations. No more curse, and God's servants will see his face.
